Your first session is a chance to decide whether you like a particular fragrance and whether the equipment is easy to use. Choose one scent to try, check the stick-and-holder fit, and plan how you will end the session before you begin.
The photographs show incense in different settings; follow the instructions for your own equipment. For lighting, extinguishing and ash-care steps, use our how to burn incense sticks guide. This checklist focuses on the choices around that first use.

1. Choose a fragrance you want to compare
Start with the product's scent description and your own preferences. Choose one description that sounds appealing, such as floral, woody or spicy, rather than expecting a fragrance to create a particular feeling. Keep the product name or packaging so you can identify what you tried later.
If several options interest you, compare pack sizes and the number of scents included. A smaller purchase can be a practical way to try an unfamiliar scent, when that option is available. Do not assume a mixed pack contains equal numbers of every fragrance unless the listing says so.
2. Check what the pack includes
- Format: confirm that you are choosing sticks. The format chooser covers the other shapes.
- Stick information: look for length, construction, quantity and the maker's instructions.
- Accessories: check whether a holder is included and whether a separate ash-catching plate is required.
- Fit: compare the stick's specifications with the holder's stated compatibility. Read our cored and coreless stick guide if those terms are unfamiliar.

3. Make one complete setup
Put the packet, suitable holder, ash catcher and lighting equipment together before you start. Read the extinguishing instructions now, so you will not need to search for them while incense is burning. If a fit or handling instruction is unclear, ask the seller before lighting.
Allow air circulation without drafts, stay with burning incense and put it out before leaving or sleeping. See CFA's fire-safety checklist and the full setup precautions.
4. Keep the comparison simple
Try one fragrance at a time so your notes have a clear reference. Choose a session you can end deliberately, rather than one that runs into a meeting, errand or bedtime. If you want to stop, use the extinguishing steps instead of waiting for the rest of the stick.
If a room has an unexplained odor, investigate and address its cause before choosing a fragrance. Incense should not become a reason to postpone that task.

5. Record what matters to you
A short note is enough. Use these prompts after the session:
- Which product and scent did I try?
- Did I like the fragrance as described, or would I prefer a different style?
- Was the holder easy to load and clear after cooling?
- Did the ash land where I expected?
- Would I buy this scent again, try another, or skip incense next time?
For the next comparison, change one choice at a time. That could be the fragrance, pack size or holder design. Keep any equipment that already meets your needs; there is no requirement to build a collection.

Build a shortlist
Browse incense sticks for the scent and pack details that matter to you. Then compare holders by the supported stick type and ash-catching area. If you would like a purpose for your first session, the reflection guide offers optional writing prompts without requiring a particular result.
