9 Mistakes to Avoid When Using Incense

Explore the Incense Guide for format choices, holder compatibility, pack details and care.

Before lighting incense, check the holder, surroundings and ventilation, and make sure you can stay with it. Incense continues to burn while it smolders. These nine common mistakes apply to sticks, cones, backflow cones and coils; always follow the instructions supplied with your particular incense and holder.

1. Using a holder that does not fit

A stick needs secure support and an ash catcher. A cone needs a heat-resistant cone burner. A coil needs the support specified for its shape and size. Backflow cones need a compatible burner with aligned openings. Do not balance a loose stick or coil on a plate. Compare incense holders by supported format, and use our incense cones vs sticks guide if you are unsure which type you have.

2. Placing incense near things that can burn

Choose a stable, heat-resistant surface with clear space around and above the incense. Keep curtains, paper, clothing and other combustible items away, and follow any clearance stated by the manufacturer. London Fire Brigade’s incense guidance also stresses stable holders and separation from combustible materials.

3. Lighting more incense to test different scents

Try fragrances separately rather than burning several together. It is easier to tell which scent you prefer, and each additional piece creates more smoke. A mixed-scent pack does not mean all the pieces should be burned at once.

4. Treating “holder” and “burner” as a compatibility guarantee

Product names overlap. Check what the design actually supports, including the size of the incense and where ash will fall. A waterfall channel alone does not make a holder suitable for sticks or coils. For a backflow setup, follow the backflow burner setup guide.

Inspect the holder before use. Stop using a damaged or unstable holder, and keep the ash-catching area clear of packaging and other objects.

5. Closing the room to keep the fragrance in

Keep the room ventilated. Do not blow smoke into the room or deliberately direct it toward people. The EPA identifies burning as a source of indoor particulate matter and recommends proper ventilation for incense. Avoid direct drafts at the burner, but never trade ventilation for a stronger fragrance or a tidier waterfall effect.

6. Leaving incense within reach of children or pets

Keep incense, hot holders, matches and lighters out of reach. Choose a location where the burner cannot be knocked over or pulled down.

7. Handling or cleaning it while it is hot

Do not move a burning holder or touch a lit cone. Follow the product’s extinguishing instructions, confirm the ember is out, and wait until the incense, ash and holder are completely cool before handling or disposal. There is no universal cooling time. Clean according to the holder’s care instructions, and do not put warm ash in the trash.

8. Assuming “natural” means smoke is harmless

A natural-material claim does not remove the need for ventilation or smoke precautions. Avoid inhaling smoke directly. If smoke causes discomfort, stop using the incense. For advice about a health condition or sensitivity, speak with a qualified health professional rather than relying on a product description.

9. Leaving it burning while you leave or sleep

Stay in the room and attentive while incense burns. Extinguish it before leaving or going to bed, even if you expect to return soon. Choose another time if you are sleepy or unable to supervise it.

A quick check before every burn

  • The incense and holder are compatible.
  • The setup is stable, heat-resistant and clear of combustible items.
  • The room has ventilation and the burner is out of reach.
  • You know the manufacturer’s lighting and extinguishing instructions.
  • You can remain present until it is extinguished.

Choose your format from incense sticks, incense cones or incense coils, then check the holder’s compatibility before buying. For the downward smoke effect, browse waterfall incense burners and read the setup guide above.
